Deconstructing Tostadas for Everyone to Easily Enjoy

One of our favorite cuisines is Mexican and we surely eat well beyond our fair share of chips and salsa, enchiladas and tacos. If you ask my daughter what she wants for dinner, 9 out of 10 times it will be an enchilada. Even if she ate one the night before.

Patrick with sombrero

He may not have been a fan of the sombrero but he’s loved mexican food since he could eat!

The last visit to our usual place in town, my son asked what a tostada was. Even though he always orders the same thing, he asks about other menu items and I believe he’d like to be more adventurous, but those darn enchiladas are so good and tempting!

And he’s a bit of a creature of habit. I’ve heard a lot of kiddos are like that.

As I began to explain the components of a tostada he immediately recalled the struggles a friend of his had with a tostada when he joined us for lunch one day. He remembered that it was pretty messy to eat and I had to help his friend sort of “cut it up” into bite-sized pieces.

Needless to say, he passed on the tostada but asked if I’d order one so that he could watch me eat it and figure it out for next time. How nice of him, right? I’m not a big fan of tostadas so I passed too, but decided we’d try them at home. In a new way. We deconstructed the tostada to make them easier to enjoy.

Tostada made easy

Easy Tostadas Without the Mess

I bought tortilla chips, an avocado, fresh pico de gallo salsa, cheese (for my daughter) and pinto beans. The avocado was mashed up with some of the salsa into what my son declared was the best guacamole he’s ever had.

He even asked for my secret recipe. I love that kid!

Guacamole

Easy Guacamole … no secret recipe!

I gave the kids four bowls with each of the tostada “ingredients” and let them make their own. My daughter said she felt like a cook, making her own dinner. She may have enjoyed the process and experience more than the food. Who cares, she ate everything!

Both kids loved assembling their own creations and there was little mess left behind. I had a few more finger bowls dirty than usual but clean up was super easy and quick.

Happy kids, happy mama. Quick, healthy, fun dinner. Success!
